Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano told Congress today that she did not know if an immigration agent was murdered with a weapon purchased through Operation Fast and Furious.

"I don't know one way or another," Napolitano answered when asked if Operation Fast and Furious figured in the death of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Special Agent Jaime Zapata, murdered in Mexico in the line of duty. "I just don't know one way or the other," she added.

ICE honored Zapata today for the one-year anniversary of his death. "He was the type of person who wanted to contribute something significant to this world," ICE Director John Morton said today. Napolitano said that the ICE agent connected to Operation Fast and Furious had "very minimal" involvement in the gunwalking.

Speaking about Operation Fast and Furious in general, Napolitano added that there were "lots of mistakes made, and [they] should never be repeated."
